Dual Chainring, a 12 speed alternative? [ H&H 33/50T 1000km Test ]
Is the new 12 speed the game changer we were looking for?
Or could a dual chainring be a better option for those reluctant to pay the premium price of the P Line 12 speed? We have now toured over 1000 km with a dual chainring, so we’re ready to talk about how it worked out.

    I just got my rental¹ Brompton with the telescopic seatpost and M-Type handlebar. My inseam is 85 cm, but I'm did the testride most comfortably with the telescopic post fully extended to it's maximum. The good thing is that this position also is most closely to the position I had on the Tern Joe C21 that needs replacing², which I rode somewhere between trekking and racing positions. ¹ Rental to try it a year before purchasing one, or not. ² The aluminium frame broke right at the seatpost insert above the top framebar.

    It's a nice comparison from a design perspective with technical approach. Accidentally that helped me choosing wheel size between 16" and 20" with gear already near the ground (< 4"). My wife Linda (now 69yr) and I (73yr), first bought our Brompton (M6R with a 44 T chain ring) in 2019. It was an indulgence in a way, as we saw it as an easy bike to transfer and ride for holidays in Europe. Our first overseas trip to Europe was soon after purchase, and included a ride over Col du Tourmalet with all our luggage, then some rides in the Dolomites near Bormio (including Stelvio, and a ride up to Passo di Gavia - in June 2019) Returning home it has become our everyday bikes, and my Brompton has done over 38,000 km in 5 years. Looking to the future (we’re not getting younger) we are looking at the Titanium 12 Speed bike, a much lighter bike at 9.2kg (including a rear rack) However this bike has a 50T chain ring. That means that riding on the flat at a cadence of 90RPM, your top speed will be 49.4km/hr. That is ridiculous gear to have; only an elite pro -cyclist could achieve that speed on a flat smooth road (without riding in a peloton) On steep hills, assuming a ‘grind’ cadence of 40RPM my speed on a 12 speed Titanium in the lowest gear would be 5.5km/hr. (which is the same as my current Brompton M6R with a 44T chain ring - determined from www.sheldonbrown.com/gear-calc.html) ie the 12 speed Titanium currently offers NO benefit other than a lower weight. Brompton currently doesn’t offer a 44T Chainwheel on their Titanium bikes. The 44T chainwheel is a MUST for me in riding around the hillier parts of Melbourne and in our mountains; and I’m sure for many in other cities around the world. For my hills, a 12sp Titanium with a 44T chainring it would mean less grind (perhaps an RPM near 48) at a speed of 5.4km/hr, and keep me riding to 80! Why doesn’t Brompton add a 44T option to the 12sp Titanium range and provide a 12 sp Titanium that meets the need for a lot more potential Brompton bike riders. It’s a no-brainer; Brompton, it’s time to come to the party!! (Will Butler - Adams, I’m happy to buy you the first drink)

    • @2Bikes4Adventure
      @2Bikes4Adventure 8 днів тому

      We arrived to the same conclusion: A 12speed+50T is basically only giving you one additional lower gear (ref ua-cam.com/video/5dbbAuFa60s/v-deo.html ) and no advantage over a 6speed+44T. With the C-Line 12 speed due early 2025, it should become easier to configure a 12speed+44T (without paying the P-Line/T-Line premium). PS Col du Tourmalet with loaded Brompton: Kudos!

    Great video, as usual! I am thinking of ordering the dual chainring but I am nit sure which one should I select. What are the advantages of the 54T/33T over 50T/33T? Will it give more speed while riding on flat terrain? Would I lose some of the gears in between? Thank you

    • @2Bikes4Adventure
      @2Bikes4Adventure 11 днів тому

      A 54T/33T would certainly provide a wider range. It has some minor drawbacks however: 1- It requires a longer chain (thus the tensioner is lower and the chain “floppier” while riding with the 33T). 2- The gear overlap between the chainrings is reduced, thus increasing the need to (manually) swap between 33T and 54T as the terrain profile changes. 3- The cadence/speed while using the most efficient gears (direct drive) 2-/2+ was above our regular cruising speed. The 50T was a more efficient match for us while cycling on flat terrain.

    Hi, Pam! I really love your and Gilbert's channel. Such great information about bikes, tours, accommodations, etc. By the way, do you come from a scientific/technology background? You seem to cover a lot of wonderful technical details about bikes, bike performance, etc. You may have seen this UA-cam video, but one gentleman installed a front derailleur on his Brompton to toggle between his small and large chain rings, and it seemed to work flawlessly. As a cyclist who has ridden both of these bikes extensively, do you think that the Mariner D8 is significantly disadvantaged compared to the Brompton for the flight to/from, getting around by rail, being able to store your bike in hotel rooms, etc. on the Four Rivers Ride? I absolutely love my Dahon Mariner D8, but I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy a Brompton C line, 6-speed to get around more easily during this trip? Thank you for your thoughts on this!

    • @2Bikes4Adventure
      @2Bikes4Adventure 12 днів тому

      The Mariner would have no difficulty tackling the 4 Rivers trail. The issue would be the logistic surrounding air travel. Packing it within the 62in/158cm free allowance would be a serious challenge (some dismantling will be required). Carrying the bike in/out of the hotel room every day would be easier (and cause less discussion) if inside a bag. Vincita makes one for 20” bikes ($US90) that attaches to the saddle when not in use. Finally, you would have to test your pannier/luggage setup (rear rack? Front attachment?) prior to departure to ensure it can accommodate everything you want to bring. A Brompton would certainly make the “non-cycling” part of the trip easier, but travelling with a bike you already own will make you appreciate it even more. Ref Dual Chainring: while a front derailleur would indeed be nice, a 3rd gear shifter would be cumbersome on an M-handlebar. PS Yes, we both worked in the Aerospace Flight Simulation industry for many years.

    I use 54/33T chainring on my brompton, and like you i found when touring i just leave it on 33T is very convenient when carrying all the stuff. 54T reduces the overlap between the gearing and increases the range further. I did few tours on it so far - and find it great. I got my local bike shop to install it, and only quoted me £70 for installation, which considering I don't have the tools for bottom bracket removal is worth it. I would also say as the chain ring is actually lighter than the original chainring, it's one of the few mods that increase the range of gears AND you lose few grams, rather than gaining.

    You guys are always educational !!! Clear and concise. Thank you. I was thinking about getting a 4-speed Brompton to be used as an urban bike in NYC. Very little hill climbing would be needed. I would like to use a single tooth chainring upfront. What size chainring would you recommend so I could comfortably pedal at 20 mph in 4th gear? The lowest gear doesn't need to go so low. For that rare steep hill, I don't mind getting off the bike and walking. Top speed is more important. Thank you.

It generally works well, but there is a clicking sound when I use 1+, 2+, and 3+ on the 33t chainring. The 1-, 2-, and 3- work well, without the clicking sound. Do you get the same issue? If not, what do you think it could be due to? Thanks!

    • @2Bikes4Adventure
      @2Bikes4Adventure 23 дні тому

      Sorry to hear about your problem. We don’t experience any clicking while on 33T and the small rear sprocket (13T (+)). To troubleshoot it, turn the crank slowly and notice at which frequency the clicking occurs (ex.: once per chain revolution? once per crank turn? multiple per crank turn? Every chain link? Random?) This could help isolate the source of the mechanical interference. GIve a special look at the rear of the 5 bolts holding the chainring, making sure they do not touch the chain while on 33T. PS Did you experience any problems installing the 3mm bottom bracket spacer?

    • @sebastianmontes5532

The clicking pattern seems to be once per chain rotation so I will look closely today to determine what is causing the disruption. Knowing that you do not have the same issue and that the 33T chainring should work well with the 13T sprocket is of great help. And yes, I did have the same problem you had with the spacer. No one can imitate Brompton's ingenious folding design. Even 2nd best will be much to be desired for folding design and it's simplicity. However, after owning several Brompton over the years, it does have some drawback. Biggest one is the weight. The standard Brompton weighs around 28lbs. It makes a huge difference when you travel with it, especially mass transit. Second is the maintenance. The standard use Sturmey Archer integrated hub design. It is very fragile and requires periodic maintenance. It's definitely old school. So you will likely need to bring it to a Brompton dealer for service regularly to maintain its proper operation. Otherwise, you will start to notice shifting issues. Third is, you will need to wipe off any water if it gets wet. It rusts very quickly if you don't - especially if you live in humid or live where inclimate weather is frequent.

    I have a Dahon vector x27h 20inch folding bike. Is this suitable for long distance touring? Folding size is bigger than brompton. Can i travel by plane with my bike for luggage?

      The Vector x27H’s light weight and large gear range would be an asset for multimodal transport and long rides. Baggage(s) attach points could be an issue. As for air travel, its handlebar would be problematic. You would most likely have to remove them if you want to have a chance to fit the bike in an airport approved luggage. Keeping within the 62in/158cm would be a challenge.

    I've been a lifelong road bike rider, primarily on bikes with 700c tires. I bought a Brompton about 6 months ago due to 1) desire to travel by air and bring my bike with me, and 2) many years of arthritis in my hands has finally convinced me to move to a less painful riding position of the Brompton, which requires less weight on my hands. I love my Brompton more each time I ride it, due in part to so much less hand pain but also because I just find it quirky and also find that I'm riding a bit slower and just enjoying the slower more deliberate pace and the curious looks of the people I pass. I've wondered what the actual differences were in speed and performance compared to my very fast carbon road bikes, and this video has answered those questions with remarkable accuracy. Thanks so much for making these great videos.

      Hopefully you will soon have the chance to travel by air as well. Being able to cycle to/from airports is an added bonus over full size bikes.

    I bought the bag and a smaller mount (same width as bag) and fitted the bag vertically instead so it’s easier to access the contents without taking it off. Love these bags so got two and they are my new go to Bikepacking kit.

      Yes it works great on the same set up as on the video but is accessible too. I don’t know why they didn’t do that.

    Smashing ideas with beautiful sizilian views.On a test ride ride i take my bis discgolf bag in front and fixed it at the steering by the breast belt..these bags are often cheap avaiable , i prefer those with hard bottom and comfortable straps.

      We still use our Dahon Mariner D8 for short trips around town. No mechanical issue yet. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to try any Dahon Mu models (latest versions are 9, 10 and 11 speeds)

      Not as much the size as what you plan to do with it. If you plan to hand carry the (folded) bike, taking bus/metro/train on regular basis, go for an H handlebar Brompton. If you want a bicycle for occasional trips around town and/or seasonal vacations, go for the Mariner.

    Thanks for the video. I had a Brompton for 20+ years but got a new 6 speed a year ago. Default 50 chainring way too high for me, so replaced with a 44-28 double (new BB needed). In 28 chain *just* clears the chainstay. V low gears but that’s what I like - not had to walk anything yet. Top gear not high but enough for me. Like you a 4 gear overlap so don’t have to do the manual change too often. A front changer would be good, but I agree it’s still a v good setup as is.

    I've always wondered why Brompton kept the dual derailleur-cum-hub contraption instead of using an all-in-the-hub system. Less hassle, less grease, they could also move from chain to belt at the same time.

    I had a poor experience dealing with the owner Jeff. Long story but let’s just say I didn’t get the seat. Most bizarre experience I’ve ever had with a sales person. I wonder how this guy can run a business with a personality that was so self righteous and condescending. My advice would be for him to stop lecturing people about the seat and just answer some simple questions, take the money and mail out the seat. This guy can’t get out of his own way. That was my experience anyway.

    on long trips i only carry patchkit, tube, spare tyre, spare valve, 3 levers, 3-4-5 mm allen, and a 15 mm wrench. i never remove the pedals and don't carry braking pads and of course this doesn't prepare me for chain problems but i can live with that. i'd just get off and push the bike until i reach a shop if i ever break a chain somehow. i'll consider adding an 8 mm wrench because of this video. never thought about it but this could have come in handy last time the stranded water froze into the brake cable housing right at the caliper where it's going upwards.
